About what is it like to live and work in the Portland Oregon area

What is it like to live and work in the Portland Oregon area?
I live in Austin Texas now, which is a place many people even wish to move to...however, as a native Texan, baby boomer, single, wanting to live somewhere else that is nice, I have been thinking maybe Portland. I wish for a place that is very liberal, diverse cultures, but with opportunity for stable employment as an electrical engineer in the architectural design industry. Any firsthand info would be appreciated.

Answer 1 :
Portland is a wonderful place to live. The city is liberal-minded, very open and hospitable. It is safe, and famous for microbrews. The rain is a bit of a myth. While their are plenty of rainy days, especially fall-spring, it is mostly a high overcast with very little actual rain. People here are getting excited about Greg Oden coming to play for the Trail Blazers and the city is very active during the summertime. The Rose Festival includes an airshow, a race, a parade, festival on the waterfront. Live concerts are held on the waterfront all summer long, including the Blues Festival. Their are wonderful hang out spots within the city, mostly centering around the microbrews. McMenamin's, McMenamin's, McMenamin's. They have it figured out. They own numerous pubs across the area including the Kennedy School, Mission Theater, the Edgefield. The Edgefield which is in Tualitin is a nine hole par 3 golf course, with a 19th century hotel renovated into an Irish style pub, a movie theater for a couple of bucks you can see some classics while you have a beer. Their is a great singles scene in the city as well. Portland is a very active city. Hiking is popular with the convenience of the Columbia River Gorge thirty minutes away, and skiing on Mt. Hood during the winter is among the best in the country. Portland also has a lot of softball leagues as well as soccer and some world class golf courses. Culturally, Portland is liberal, open-minded, and a very friendly environment. People here still say hello, hold doors, give directions and are generally pleasant. The city is very low on crime, which is remarkable considering how many different neighborhoods their are and the diverse group of people. The outdoorsman, the hippy, the athlete, the metrosexual, the cowboy, the professional all are at home in Portland. Within the city their is a large Asian community, as well as hispanic community that is growing all the time. In the end Portland is a lot more class oriented than race oriented. Portland is one of the best places to live in the country!
Answer 2 :
I'm a native Texan and have lived in Portland for the past ~3 years. I lived ~5 years in Austin as well. From a culture standpoint, I think the cities are very similar. They are both liberal, although Portland is bit more extreme than Austin. You'll see 'Keep Portland Weird' bumper stickers just like the 'Keep Austin Weird' ones (I'm not sure who ripped off who). They both have a lot of outdoor activities. It does rain a lot here, but it's not the downpours you see in Austin, it's more of a mist/sprinkle. Summers in Portland are unbeatable - perfect weather & not much rain from July - Sept. I also like being able to drive an hour to the beach or an hour to the ski slopes. I do miss the food in TX though. There's some great seafood, Thai, and sushi up here, but I haven't found any

About i live in Portland but work in Vancouver, WA - paycheck question

I live in Portland but work in Vancouver, WA - paycheck question?
I currently own a home in Portland and will begin my new job in Vancouver, WA next month. Will I be taxed OR income tax if I work in Vancouver in my monthly paychecks? Or will I just be taxed at the end of the year with slightly increased paychecks?
Portland - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
You pay taxes to the jurisdiction you live in
Answer 2 :
Usually, your state income taxes are deducted by the jurisdiction that you earn the money in, but you file where your legal residence is, unless both states try to collect from you... Federal income taxes are collected in every state, but you might be liable for Oregon estimated state income tax payments, since WA has state sales taxes, instead of income taxes... Better to check with an experienced tax consultant early on...

About where is a good place to work in Portland, OR as a Receptionist

Where is a good place to work in Portland, OR as a Receptionist?
I am looking to move in December from San Diego, CA (big change) and am needing some advice on how to get a good job in Portland, OR. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, when should I start sending in my resume?

Answer 1 :
I worked at Legacy Emanuel Hospital as an admitter. It was a really good job for me at the time. I was in college and they were very flexible with the hours because patients are admitted 24hr/day 7 days/week. They pay pretty well too. The website posts pay scales which is helpful if you're relocating. Other area hospitals hire for the same thing depending on where you want to live. www.legacyhealth.org www.providence.org www.kaiserpermanentejobs.org www.adventisthealthnw.com www.ohsu.edu/hr/irc
Answer 2 :
I don't have any specific suggestions. Look on portland.craigslist.org and www.oregonlive.com for general job listings, however. I would start sending you resume now though. The good thing about Portland being hot is that we have lots of interesting people moving here. The bad thing is that a lot of those people are reasonably well educated and therefore the job market at the level you're talking about is pretty competitive.
Answer 3 :
School districts might be a good place to look. There are agencies that provide services to school districts as well. Some local districts/agencies include: Portland Public Schools, Centennial School District, David Douglas School District, Parkrose School District, Reynolds School District and Gresham School District. Also, Multnomah Education Service District and Clackamas Education Service District. Working for schools is great as you get good benefits and decent pay. If you google those places, you should be able to find the HR department on line and look for any positions. Good luck.
Answer 4 :
the state of Oregon has alot of reception and office type jobs in Portland... here's the website http://www.oregonjobs.org/

About do indoor TV antennas work in Portland,Maine

Do indoor TV antennas work in Portland,Maine?
I need an antenna (hopefully an indoor one) that picks up channels in portland,ME. If you have one, what channels can you get? What antenna should I get that doesn't cost too much?
TVs - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
The real question you should be asking is "how strong are the signal as my house". The city doesn't matter, how far you live from the transmitters does. If the signals are not strong enough, no indoor antenna in the world is going to work well at your location. Visit http://www.antennaweb.org and put in your zip code. If you are more than about 5 miles from the transmitters, an indoor antenna is probably not going to work for you. The site will also give you a standard color code for an antenna you can take shopping.
Answer 2 :
Antennaweb is wrong most of the time, and leaves off many channels. Try TVFOOL.COM and plug in your address to get a full report of channels in your area. Stations in the "green zone" are generally strong enough to be picked up by a small indoor antenna. Anything in the yellow or red zone require an attic or roof antenna for good reception. There is no such thing as a "digital antenna", so don't fall for the hype listed on the packaging. You might try a standard rabbit ears with a loop to start with. If you can't get a useful signal it may be time to graduate to an attic or roof antenna. Here is a plot of your general location http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d81a38e2a5b3fc0 It looks like you have a few channels that are plenty strong, but some others that can't be picked up by an indoor antenna.

About if you live in vancouver washington but work in portland oregon, do you have to pay oregon income tax

if you live in vancouver washington but work in portland oregon, do you have to pay oregon income tax?
I am considering buying a house in Vancouver, just across the river from Portland. Washington has no state income tax. Will I have to still pay Oregon state income tax since my job is in Portland?
Careers & Employment - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
Yes but it will be refunded if you file an "out of state resident form" with an Oregon tax return.
Answer 2 :
You pay taxes based on your residence. You employer withholds taxes based on where you work. Fine line between the two. Ask you employer they will know for sure.

About Need work before the 4th, what agencies in Portland, OR can place me quickly

Need work before the 4th, what agencies in Portland, OR can place me quickly?
I need to find a job or some kind of work in Portland before the week is out. I've been applying everywhere and getting nothing in return. So I'm planning on turning to a temp/placement agency. I've tried Labor Ready in the past, but they never sent me out in the 2 months that I was going in everyday at 5:30am. If someone could drop the name of a place that actually sends people out, that would be great.

Hate to break it to you but your chances are extremely slim. Portland has the highest unemployment out of all major cities in the country! That is a fact and is the most recent numbers. Your best bet is to apply at all of them, and I do mean all.

About how long does it usually take to get temp work in Portland

How long does it usually take to get temp work in Portland?
I'm relocating to Portland (Oregon) and want to do some temp work for awhile when I get there. I've heard that the economy isn't necessarily doing that great there right now. So, does anyone know how long it generally takes before getting temp assignments? A day? A week? Months? If you've temped before (even if not in Portland), how long did it take to get your first one? I'm not too picky about what sort of temp work I'd be doing. I did recently graduate with bachelor's degrees in business and finance, if that would help me at all. Bonus points to anyone who might know what a normal wage for a temp job in Portland might be! Thanks!
Portland - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It really isn't that hard to find temp work in portland, especially in the business field. However, the pay isn't that great usually between $9-$15. I recommend checking out portland.craigslist.com and look under the jobs section to kind of get and idea of what is available, and what they are paying. Good luck to you.
Answer 2 :
I'm working as a temp at the public library, you get paid somewhere between $8.00 to $10.00 generally speaking. I applied on the first of last month, got a call interview in 3 days got the job within a week and half. I have never volunteered or worked before. And I work 6 hours a day 5 days a week. The $9-15 salary is usually for permanent workers since my co-worker who is permanent gets $14.00/hr. I'm applying at a grocery store(WinCo or Haggen) and TriMet where the seasonal part tim employee gets paid about $11.00 an hour with no expirience necessary. After 3-6 months you get a $2 raise. I graduated high school 2 years ago, I got okay grades, never had any experience in any sort of work, since you're a college grad, you'll probably get in easier.
Answer 3 :
You can get a job in one day. Check Craiges list, there are several different classifications wanting employees. The average wage is about $11. per hour for temp work. Some pay very well and some pay minimum wage with no relation between the difficulty of the job and wages.
